Green design, what is it?

Green design is a buzzword that is causing quite a stir among the masses as well as the industry at large. But what is it? Green design can be best put as environmentally conscious and responsible design and building. Ok that’s nice, but how does one build or remodel environmentally responsibly in this day and age?

Well there are lots of ways one can be sure of building and designing Green. There are plenty of designer finish products for your remodeling and building projects. Green design is about lessening our impact on the environment. This means using recycled goods, recyclable goods, utilizing renewable resources, and seeking out alternative energy sources. Everything from carpet to electricity can be installed and utilized in a home with a smaller impact than we have been accustomed, without sacrificing any luxuries. In fact many Green Products have now become most fashionable and chick.

For instance, wool carpeting and bamboo floors are all the rage, and as they are renewable resources and with controlled exploitation we are not damaging the Earths ecosystems. Tile’s, are even being recycled or produced from recycled materials, and the results are beautiful. But it is not only the finish products that can have an impact.

There are Green solutions for how a structure is built as well as the way is it embellished. Technology has come far enough to engineer our cast off clothing for home insulation. Recycled denim is being used in many green buildings and homes as batt insulation in walls and basements. Cotton is another alternative for the old and harmful fiberglass insulation. Roofing options too, are available to us in a much more green Setting. Shake shingles can be purchased from companies that replant as many trees as they cut down in the manufacturing of these roofing shingles. Asphalt shingles can be recycled and reused, as well made from other recycled material. Much of our lumber can be purchased from companies that are devoted to preventing further deforestation. Trees are planted in areas where timber cutting happens, and the areas are not completely exploited before reseeding occurs. It just takes a little research to find out where our materials are coming from and how much of an impact we actually have.

Another way Green building and design comes into play, is with alternative energy. This could mean, wind, solar, or hydro power. Convert your heating system from gas, propane, or oil to electric. Install a stove for heating purposes and design open floor plans for easier temperature moderation. Generate your electricity yourself, and you could save thousands. Wind and solar electricity are the most effective and readily available sources.

Making smart and Green choices can help slow the abuse society heaps onto our planet. Seek out green builders, or speak with your contractors about the your Green preference. It only takes a few small steps in order to start the ball rolling in a very good direction at a very fast pace. Choose your finish products mindfully and insist on researching alternative energy sources.
